All Who Minister: Ways of Serving God's People. Edited by Maylanne Maybee. Toronto: Anglican Book Centre, 2001. 251 pp. CDN $24.95 (paper). great strength of this collection edited by Maylanne Maybee (the Anglican Church of Canada's most incisive theologian of justice and advocate of the vocational diaconate) is that it is rooted securely in the lived experience of congregations. One hundred and sixty-two of its 250 pages are devoted to stories of how baptized people and their ordered and non-ordered leaders, many of them in tiny communities or overlooked corners of our consumption-driven cities, have struggled over the past thirty years with what it means for Christian communities to live faithfully, justly, and in the fellowship of the apostles. One of the glories ol our Anglican inheritance is the system, that vision of being church that imagines the whole world and all of human society as the place where the church is responsible for bringing the good news of God's love and care (cure), caning it up into actual geographical vicinities for which a local congregation or parish church has the primary responsibility for carrying out just that task. In this vision (as contrasted with most forms of Protestantism) it is not the congregation that is the primary focus ol Gods salvific activity, but rathe1]· the neighborhood in which the congregation functions as a multivocal sign and agent ol that activitv. Increasingly in the late twentieth centurv congregations have turned inward upon themselves, and now find themselves incapable of any vision beyond the comfort of the core group of faithful attenders. mission is no longer God's call to care for the world around us. but the cosseting of mostly latemiddle-aged consumers of religion. All Who Minister begins with a series of case study narratives, about parishes and congregations who have sought intentionally to live out of a larger vision, and about serious and creative attempts on the part of diocesan leaders and bishops to be creative in the context of some of the least resourced parts of Canada.
