General and Specific Skeletal Indicators in an Eastern Ontario Identification

Abstract
Found partially decomposed human remains were macerated for the purposes of identification. Analysis indicated an almost complete male skeleton of probable Caucasian ancestry, an estimated age at death of 30–44 years, and a calculated living stature of 179.41 cm ± 3.62. These findings fit the police profile of a 37-year-old white male, 180 cm tall, who had gone missing in May, 2000. Other identifying features commensurate with the man's presumptive medical history included old fractures in the nasal bones, left maxilla, and in two metacarpals; a possible surgical incision in the wall of an external auditory meatus; and the tunneling effects of knee surgery in a proximal tibia. Changes commonly related to diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) were also apparent in this person whose body mass index indicated obesity. This paper highlights the usefulness of a complete anthropological analysis in cases where identity is suspected but ante mortem medical or dental records are not immediately forthcoming.
