From Behind the Veil: Associate Topical Editors and Guest Editors of <i>Optometry and Vision Science</i>

Optometry and Vision Science (OVS) has always been published monthly. Since I became Editor-in-Chief in 2004, the average number of papers in each issue has almost doubled. There has also been a slight reduction in acceptance rate of submitted manuscripts. So quality has not suffered! In short, OVS now attracts many more submissions and creates a considerably greater editorial review load. For example, as I noted last month, the number of manuscripts submitted to OVS increased 50% between 2009 and 2010. To address this, as Editor-in-Chief, I have called upon colleagues from around the world to be occasional Guest Topical Editors for OVS. As Editor-in-Chief, I have invited them to serve as “Associate Topical Editors.” As Topical Editors, they identify reviewers and provide recommendations to me and to the authors; in short, they guide the review. They are an impressive group of most generous colleagues who unselfishly offer their time and constructive efforts as Topical Editors. Without them, our Editorial Board members would simply be overwhelmed in their own “regular” Topical Editor roles. But until now, the names of the Associate Topical Editors have not been published! Although our “Guest Editors” for Feature Issues are named along with the Call for Papers and in the specific Feature issue of OVS, they clearly deserve more visibility. They also act as Topical Editors, in addition to selecting the accepted papers to be included in the Feature. In my last Editorial, I promised to publicly thank and name these impressive colleagues. I apologize for keeping them “hidden.” I am most grateful for their unselfish service to the vision/eye, optometry, and ophthalmology community and to OVS in particular.
