Résumé Le commerce équitable propose une éthique appliquée issue des besoins des communautés paysannes d’où il émerge. Depuis quelques années, la popularité croissante du commerce équitable dans le monde occidental suscite une réflexion sur la contribution de cette nouvelle pratique commerciale à l’éthique des affaires : le mouvement équitable peut-il offrir un apport substantiel et durable au monde des affaires, du travail et des organisations? Afin d’aborder cette question, cet article commence par retracer la vie et les idées de Frans van der Hoff, instigateur de la coopérative de café équitable UCIRI au Mexique et cofondateur de la toute première certification équitable au monde, le label Max Havelaar. Le parcours original de ce prêtre-ouvrier, des Pays-Bas au Mexique en passant par le Chili et le Canada, illustre la trajectoire sinueuse du commerce équitable et son potentiel de transformation de l’éthique des affaires. L’article se poursuit par la présentation de cinq propositions du commerce équitable au domaine de l’éthique des affaires. Finalement, il présente aussi des réponses tirées de l’expérience de van der Hoff aux principales critiques adressées au commerce équitable.
