Abstract
Long term durability of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) systems used to strengthen prestressed concrete cylinder pipes (PCCP) and other water transmission structures has been a topic of significant interest since the CFRP systems were initially implemented for structural repair of pipelines in 1997. Although there is a substantial amount of durability studies available on some CFRP systems for strengthening of structural elements, there is significantly less information on long term durability studies of the CFRP when submerged in water. The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) and two CFRP manufacturers submitted CFRP samples to be submerged in water tanks at the MWD laboratory and tested as part of MWD's ongoing CFRP liner research program. Some of the samples that were submerged in 2000 were recently tested by MWD and an independent laboratory to provide long term durability data. In conjunction with the laboratory experiments, inspection results. The results from the recent inspection and the laboratory experiments showed negligible change in the performance of the materials thereby supporting previous data on the capability of CFRP materials as a long term durable solution for pipeline rehabilitation. The experimental data and pipeline inspection results were analyzed and reported through a cooperative research study between MWD and the CFRP manufacturer in order to provide the PCCP user industry specific durability effects to CFRP material properties submerged in water for extended periods. This study will assist engineers and pipeline users in establishing the applicability of a CFRP system as a long term repair. This paper should prove to be a useful document in the ongoing study of CFRP as a viable repair solution by addressing the materials long term durability performance.
