Abstract

The purpose of construction, and indeed Civil Engineering (CE), is to answer one of the most basic human needs, the need for shelter i.e. to provide a safe, productive and healthy built environment for human activities. This has not changed for eons. In contrast, over the last 50 years, the advent of computers and information technology (IT) has introduced a plethora of innovations that are gradually changing several facets of human activities, including construction. In view of the profound changes that have taken place, it is pertinent to consider how much construction has benefited from computerization so far and what lies ahead for the future. Following a brief review of changes in the areas of IT and construction during the past 50 years in North America (NA), the current use of IT in construction will be assessed as the basis to sketch possible future scenarios of development.
