Abstract
During the Reformation, books on theological matters easily fell afoul of the Anglican hierarchy in England and the Catholic hierarchies of Continental Europe. Both Anglican and Catholic churches devised means to ensure, where possible, that manuscripts were reviewed for style and content prior to publication. This church ‘pre-censorship’ and control of the publishing industry might be interpreted as the beginnings of external peer review.
