Fish entrainment at hydropower facilities affects the productivity and biodiversity of aquatic species in upstream reservoirs. The measurement and modelling of flow structures upstream of dams is of particular importance for engineers and biologists assessing entrainment risk and designing potential fish entrainment mitigation techniques. Field measurements of the forebay hydraulics at Hugh Keenleyside dam on the Columbia River were completed in August 2010. The acoustic measurements completed over this period were able to measure high quality flow data in the forebay, however the instruments' lateral measurement constraints restricted the measurement of the high-risk zone under the dams operations during measurements. The hydraulic and biological components of fish entrainment must be evaluated hand-in-hand with the development of operationally feasible solutions to evaluate fish entrainment risk at hydropower facilities.
