Dans son dernier livre, intitulé Le Passé d'une illusion, François Furet écrivait: ‘la première guerre du XXe siècle […] reste un des événements les plus énigmatiques de l'histoire moderne.’1 De même, ou plutôt en termes plus absolus, Jean-Baptiste Duroselle concevait la Grande Guerre comme de ‘l'incompréhensible’.2 Pour ces spécialistes de la guerre et pour d'autres historiens comme Jean-Jacques Becker dont nous reprenons ici les propos, ‘[l]’énigme réside à la fois dans ses causes et dans son déroulement'.3 Luc Rasson quant à lui évoque les effets, perturbateurs, de ‘14–18’: ‘comment est-il possible que des peuples se disant “civilisés” aient pu s'entre-massacrer pendant plus de quatre ans, déstabilisant durablement les sociétés en question?’4 Face à l'énigme de cette guerre, face aussi à un effet de perturbation qui dure, plusieurs écrivains ont depuis 1980 publié des romans dont l'action se situe, au moins partiellement, dans les années 14–18. À titre d'exemples, citons Claude Simon avec L'Acacia (1989), Jean Rouaud avec Les Champs d'honneur (prix Goncourt 1990), et Sébastien Japrisol avec Un long dimanche de fiançailles (1991). Nommons aussi, entre autres romans plus récents: Cris (2001) de Laurent Gaudé, Dans la guerre (2003) d'Alice Ferney, et Les Âmes grises (Prix Renaudot 2003) de Philippe Claudel.5 Dans ce dernier, un narrateur anonyme se rappelle le meurtre en 1917 d'une jeune fille ainsi que d'autres désordres survenus à l'époque, sans en reconstituer les faits chronologiquement: les étapes de ce qui tient lieu d'enquête se confondent au récit de souvenirs plus lointains.
