Abstract
Sometimes it is fun to set off without knowing where you are going. I think that scholars are doing less and less of this now; too many of us seem to have internalized the motivational goal-setters' cant about planning one's route to success. Aimlessness is too “Sal Paradise” for today's harried intellectuals. But it can have its rewards, even when following someone else's meanderings between the covers of a book. If you bear with it, there is always a chance that the journey will lead to hidden treasures one would not otherwise find. In the case of Lisa E. Davenport's study, the journey is not an unqualified disappointment. The book is certainly formless. Although ostensibly a study of government-supported international tours by jazz artists from 1956 to 1970, it is almost entirely concerned with African American jazz artists who traveled between 1955 and 1961. There is one chapter on the period 1961 to 1966, but it largely repeats the familiar narrative regarding the domestic civil rights movement. What little of the chapter deals with the monograph's professed topic focuses on policy discussions within the State Department. The last two chapters (about a third of the book) provide a very cursory survey of jazz in the Soviet Union to 1968 (in other words, the period before it got really interesting).
