Abstract
Two quantitative traits (culm length and shoot number) were analysed with regard to growth rhythm in three genotypes of barley: the normal-alleled Bonus, its mutant homozygote mat-a8/mat-a8 (Mari) and their monohybrid. The analysis extends the phytotron results published by Gustafsson and Dormling (1972). Previously the end stage of development — time of maturity — was especially studied. The action of the heterozygous and homozygous matura-a8 allele is demonstrated by selected illustrations of growth covering the life span of the three genotypes mentioned. Various gradations of dominance and overdominance are depicted and discussed. It is pointed out that the homozygous mat-a8 mutant Mari, although conspicuous in morphology and physiology, is high-productive under certain well-defined conditions, in the field as well as in the phytotron. The monohybrid is little deviating from the original parent Bonus in exterior morphology, but depending on the phytotron climate it is inferior, equal or superior in vigour to both parents. The constancy of the phytotron environment, also when varied, leads to well-defined growth rhythm responses of the mutant heterozygote and homozygote also in such quantitative traits as those analysed here.
