Introduction : entreprendre des études doctorales en sciences infirmières engage une réflexion critique sur les traditions philosophiques inhérentes au processus de développement des connaissances. Contexte : le réalisme critique, l’herméneutique, le postmodernisme et le poststructuralisme sont des traditions philosophiques peu explorées en sciences infirmières, mais qui suscitent un intérêt grandissant. Objectif : présenter différentes traditions philosophiques et amorcer une réflexion sur leur apport au développement des connaissances de la discipline infirmière. Méthode : pour chacune des traditions, les fondements ontologiques et épistémologiques sont introduits afin de donner un aperçu de leurs principales caractéristiques. Leur apport au développement des connaissances en sciences infirmières est ensuite discuté. Résultats : l’ontologie renvoie à la réalité pouvant être conçue stratifiée, fixe et changeante, ou multiple, selon la tradition philosophique. De même, l’épistémologie met l’accent sur le pouvoir explicatif des connaissances modélisées, l’intersubjectivité, ou les rapports de pouvoir. Discussion : la diversité des traditions philosophiques constitue une richesse qui peut considérablement contribuer à l’avancement de la discipline infirmière. Conclusion : la clarification des repères philosophiques qui sous-tendent le développement des connaissances est essentielle pour les étudiants au doctorat en sciences infirmières qui entreprennent leurs projets de recherche et la construction de leur programmation de recherche future.
