Abstract
Cet article se veut une contribution à l’histoire de la théorie du cinéma. Nous visons à démontrer que celle-ci requiert certains éclairages que seules l’historiographie et la philosophie des sciences sont en mesure de lui prodiguer. L’argument est divisé en trois sections : dans la première partie nous examinons en quoi les efforts récents pour historiciser la théorie du cinéma errent en utilisant certains termes et certaines approches empruntés à la philosophie de la science. Dans la deuxième partie nous nous efforçons de réconcilier la conception des changements de paradigmes de Thomas S. Kuhn avec la conception généalogique de l’activité scientifique développée par Stephen Toulmin. Dans la troisième partie, nous redéployons notre perspective kuhnienne-toulminienne pour examiner le débat qui a opposé David Bordwell et Andrew Britton autour de l’étude du cinéma américain classique. Par le fait même, nous nous interrogeons sur les meilleures façons de concevoir les différences disciplinaires disciplinaires qui existent en études cinématographiques. Notre conclusion, enfin, spécule sur l’existence d’une visée commune en études cinématographiques.
