Abstract
La Segreteria di Stato affrontò la guerra italo-etiopica cercando da un lato di distinguere la propria linea da quella italiana, dall’altro di non scontentare il governo di Roma. Sul versante italiano la raccolta delle informazioni e i tentativi di mediazione ebbero come fulcro la Segreteria di Stato e passarono sostanzialmente attraverso l’opera di p. Pietro Tacchi Venturi, mentre minimo fu il ruolo della nunziatura d’Italia. A livello internazionale i centri d’azione più rilevanti furono rappresentati dalla nunziatura di Parigi, centrale per sondare gli umori di Laval, con l’obiettivo di costruire una mediazione francese tra Italia e Gran Bretagna ; da quella di Berna, per intercettare prima possibile le linee della Società delle Nazioni ; dalle nunziature dei Paesi latinoamericani, per l’ importanza che questi ultimi rivestivano nella politica estera italiana. Nell’ottobre 1935, inoltre, la Segreteria di Stato cercò di prendere contatti con Roosevelt per un’opera congiunta di mediazione tra l’Italia e la Gran Bretagna.
