The application of Montreal Cognitive Assessment and mini-mental state examination in the screen of cognitive disorder in the elderly

Abstract
Objective to compare the screen value of mini-mental state examination(MMSE)and Montreal Cognitive Assessment(MoCA)in the early phase of cognitive disorder.Methods 93 non-dementia cognitive disorder patients and 66 normal controls were included in the current study.MMSE and MoCA were both utilized to investigate the cognitive function of subjects,the screen effect of which was further evaluated.Results the scores of MMSE and MoCA in non-dementia cognitive disorder group were both significantly lower relative to the normal control group.Compared to the MMSE,MoCA appeared remarkably superin sensitivity,negative predictive value and Youden Index,while showed inferiority(shortcomings?)in specificity and positive predictive value in the screen of non-dementia cognitive disorder.Conclusion MMSE and MoCA are both effective screen tools in cognitive disorder for hospitalized patients,which could evaluate the diagnostic efficiency in clinic when combined together.
