Abstract
By the financial support from the International Development Research Center (IDRC), Canada to the Faculty of Agriculture, Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai, Thailand, production of some vegetable seeds was tested on highland and lowland in the North of Thailand. Results showed that the highland was more suitable, climatically, than the lowland for seed production of Chinese radish (Raphanus sativus L.) and leaf mustard (Brassica juncea L.) in terms of seed yields/area. In October, seed yield of Chinese radish at Mae Hae (highland, 1,000 m asl) was 3.66 t/ha while the yield at Hoay Luk (lowland, 800 m asl) was 2.1 t/ha. In November the yield on the highlands was 2.83 to 3.01 t/ha while the lowland was only 1.05 t/ha. The same potential was observed on leaf mustard.Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris var.pekinensis L.) seed production was also tested on the highland. However, when seed production was considered economically on the highland, only Chinese radish and leaf mustard seed production was profitable, but not for Chinese cabbage.F1 hybrid seed production of tomato (Lycoperisicon esculentum M.) was tested on the low and highlands. In first year, lowland seed yields were 34.34 to 47.41 kg/ha,while in the second year the low and highlands seed yields were 64.74 and 93.36 kg/ ha,for the two varieties tested. Both the low and highlands were suitable for the seed production of F1 hybrid tomato.F1 hybrid watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) was tested on the lowland while F1 hybrid squash (Cucubita pepo) was tested on the highland. Seed yield of watermelon was 73.65 kg/ha and squash was 71 kg/ha. The lowlands and highlands were suitable for the seed production of F1 hybrid watermelon and squash, respectively.
