On the basis of reviewing the studies concerning curriculum development and dissertation evaluation for English doctoral candidates both at home and abroad,this paper explains the connotation of doctoral candidates' academic competence,and analyzes 4 representative English doctoral programs in Canada. It further discusses the implications conveyed by the curriculum development and dissertation requirements in Canada for the development of doctoral candidates' academic competence in China.
