PRELIMINARY CLINICAL EFFICACY OF LUMBAR SYMPATHETIC GANGLION RADIOFREQUENCY THERMAL COAGULATION ON PATIENTS WITH KNEE JOINT OSTEOARTHRITIS

Abstract
Objective: To observe the short term curative efficacy and safety of the lumbar sympathetic ganglion radiofrequency thermal coagulation on patients with knee joint osteoarthritis. Methods: 63 patients with knee osteoarthritis were randomly divided into two groups. Group Ⅰ(the drug therapy group, n = 30) and Group Ⅱ(lumbar sympathetic ganglion radiofrequency therapy group, n = 33). Evaluation of WOMAC(Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index) questionnaire score before and after the treatment, the temperature changes in the knee joint, and the fastest 50 yards walk time, the complications were recorded. respectively. Results: In Group Ⅱ, the WOMAC scores after treatment were significantly lower than that those before treatment, and the scores at 3 months after treatment were lower than those at the same time point in groupⅠ(P 0.01 or P 0.05). In GroupⅠ, the WOMAC scores were decreased at 2 weeks after treatment than those before treatment(P 0.01 or P 0.05), and the dysfunction of knee at 3 months after treatment decreased that before the treatment(P 0.05). There was no significant difference in other scores. In GroupⅡ, the temperature of knee was higher after treatment for 3 months than that of before treatment, and also higher than that at the same time point in groupⅠ(P 0.01). In GroupⅠ, there was no significant difference before and after treatment. In GroupⅡ, treatment after 3 months, 50 yards walking time was faster than that before treatment, and faster than that at the same time point in group Ⅰ(P 0.05). Inguinal numb at the operation side was recorded in 6 cases in Group Ⅱ and no other complications were recorded. Conclusion: The short term curative efficacy of lumbar sympathetic radiofrequency thermal coagulation is better and more safe on treatment of knee osteoarthritis.
