Effect of birth ball exercise combined with free maternal position on labour pain, sense of labor self-control and gestational outcomes

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the effect of birth ball exercise combined with free maternal position on labour pain,anxiety,sense of labor self-control and gestational outcomes. Methods Sixty primiparas were divided into two groups when they were parturient. When the cervical dilation was 3cm, women in the experiment group performed birth ball exercise combined with free maternal position with the support of their partner and a nurse,while women in the control group took traditional maternal positions for delivery with the support of their partner and a nurse. The duration of delivery,the amount of postpartum hemorrhage within 2 hours,the Apgar score were recorded. After delivery,the women were investigated by Short Form McGill Pain Questionnaire(SF-MPQ),Visual Anxiety Analogue Scale and Labour Agentry Scale(LAS). Results The scores of labour pain and anxiety in the experimental group were significantly lower than those in the control group(P0.05);the score of LAS was significantly higher than that of the control group(P0.05). The duration of first stage of labor in the experiment group was shorter than that in the control group(P0.05);no significant differences were found in the duration of second stage and third stage of labor as well as the amount of postpartum hemorrhage within 2 hours and Apgar scores between the two groups(P0.05). Conclusion Birth ball exercise combined with free maternal position can reduce labour pain and anxiety,improve primiparas' sense of labor self-control and accelerate the progress of first stage of labor.
