Effect of MS222 on oxygen consumption rate and ammonia excretion rate of juvenile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

Abstract
The experiment was conducted in sealed plastic bags to simulate the transport of juvenile anesthetized tilapia.The tilapia in Guangtechao was treated with 0mg/L,10 mg/L,20 mg/L and 30mg/L MS222 respectively,and the contents of dissolved oxygen and ammonia were measured 0h,1h,3hs and 7hs later,to calculate the oxygen consumption rate,ammonia excretion rate and the ratio of oxygen and nitrogen of each period.The results showed that:(1) Oxygen consumption rate of tilapia treated with low concentration MS222 more than 1h was significantly lower than the control group,and then remained stable,but the ammonia excretion rate had no significant change in the period;(2) The oxygen consumption rate and ammonia excretion rate of tilapia treated with medium or high concentration MS222 were both significantly lower than the control group,and them had no significant difference except for within 1h;(3) Whether anesthesia or not,as the experiment continuing,the ratio of oxygen and nitrogen of tilapia appeared an ascending trend,and the moderate and high concentration groups increased more;but from the whole,there had no consistent trend of the ratio and anesthesia concentration.The results suggested,30 mg/L of MS222 was suitable for juvenile tilapia in Guangtechao transport,could most significantly reduce the oxygen consumption rate and ammonia excretion rate.
