Phenol rejection of different NF membranes:influence factors on rejection

Abstract
The performance of NF membranes(NF90,NF97,NF99,NF99HF) to remove phenol in phenolics-containing synthetic wastewater(1 g/L) was evaluated using a plate and frame module(Alfa Laval Lab unit M20).NF97 showed superior performance over other membranes,with phenol rejection up to 79% at 3.0 MPa,25 ℃.Influence of cross flow(0.39~0.96 m/s),temperature(20~40 ℃),pressure(0.5~3.0 MPa),phenol concentration(0.01~1 g/L),pH(3~11),salt concentration(1~3 g/L) on the phenol rejection were investigated in this work.Results indicated that cross flow,phenol concentration and salt concentration had little influence on phenol rejection,while phenol rejection decreased with temperature increase,increased with pressure increase,and pH had significant effect on phenol rejection,with phenol rejection of NF90,NF97,NF99 and NF99HF up to 90%,97%,82%,75% respectively.Low concentration phenolics-containing waste water could be concentrated and then extracted by traditional liquid-liquid extraction.Cross flow 0.6 m/s,pressure 3.0 MPa,and ambient temperature could be chosen as reference operation conditions in concentrating process.
