The full understanding of the implications of sustainable development relies on incisive economic analysis.But the study of sustainability transition from the perspective of economics requires a rethinking of the major elements of the dominant economic theories.The standard economic perspective must be broadened to take into account environmental and social perspectives.This essay discusses the most basic condition for sustainability transition,that is,the maintenance of the total natural capital stock at or above the current level,expounds the sustainable principle for resources exploitation and environmental protection in order to achieve the intergenerational equity,approaches the issues of distribution and valuation of eco-rights and eco-politics as well as the improvement of the traditional economic measurement for a better handling of the geographical environment and resources and finally reviews the environmental Kuznets curve.This study reveals that development is not a lineal process from industrialization to mass consumption but an interaction between social,economic and environmental elements.
