Follow-up Study on Electroacupuncture for Cognitive Impairment Due to Obstructive Sleep Apnea-hypopnea Syndrome

Abstract
Objective To observe the short-term and long-term clinical efficacies of electroacupuncture in treating obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome(OSAHS),as well as its effect on the patients' cognitive function.Method Twenty-two patients with OSAHS were enrolled to receive electroacupuncture at acupoints Lianquan(CV 23) and Renying(ST 9).Sleep monitoring,P300 test,Epworth Sleepiness Scale(ESS) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment(MoCA) were adopted for evaluation prior to treatment and after 6-week treatment.One year after the treatment,a follow-up study was conducted to evaluate ESS and MoCA,and to observe the clinical efficacy.Result Of the 22 patients,apnea-hypopnea index(AHI) had a notable reduction after electroacupuncture treatment(P0.05),the lowest oxygen saturation(LOS) during sleep increased significantly(P0.05),the P300 test's latency and reaction time shortened markedly(P0.01),the ESS score dropped significantly(P0.01),and the MoCA score increased markedly(P0.01).One year later,of the 22 patients,16 finished the follow-up study,while 6 failed.Among the 16 patients with OSAHS,the follow-up study did not show significant differences in the ESS and the MoCA scores compared with the pre-treatment and post-treatment scores(P0.05);While there was a significant improvement in the memory score of MoCA compared with the pre-treatment score(P0.01).Conclusion Electroacupuncture can reduce the apnea-hypopnea index,increase the oxygen saturation,shorten P300 latency and reaction time,enhance cognitive function,and improve sleepiness degree of the patients with OSAHS.However,the follow-up study conducted one year later showed that the long-term clinical efficacy was not significant.
