Effect of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor on leukopenia in severe acute respiratory syndrome patients

Abstract
Objective To evaluate efficacy of rec ombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhG-CSF)on leukopenia in severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) patients.Methods 95 pa tients with acute phase SARS were enr olled , leukocytes counts, leukocyte subsets, erythrocytes, and platelets were measured by auto blood cell counter, and rhG-CSF treatment was given to the S AR S patients whose leukocyte number3.0×109/L and/or neutrophil number 2.0×10 9/L.Results 35 patients whose leukocyte number 3.0×109/L an d/or neutrophil number2.0×109/L were treated with rhG-CSF, and their leukocy t e, neutrophil, lymphocyte, and platelet numbers significantly increased after th e treatment. Furthermore, their lung inflammations did not worsen, and the perio d of their hospitalisation was reduced. No one had secondary infection of bac terium, fungus, tuberculosis or double infections both in the hospital and duri ng the follow-up period.Conclusions Treatment with rhG-CSF in SARS patients with leukopenia can obviously increase the leukocyte, leukocyte su bset, and platelet numbers in their peripheral blood, decreasing risk of second ary infection.
