In reviewing the 90 year history of the Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine since its birth in 1926, one is struck by the forward thinking of many of its editorial board members over the decades. Not surprisingly, innovations that were imaginative and novel at the time of their inception in past decades are now often taken for granted and their sources long forgotten.The current editorial board has continued this creative tradition of the journal and instituted multiple advances of its own. No one has contributed more in this regards, often behind the scenes, than Jerad M. Gardner, MD, currently an assistant professor of pathology and dermatology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock.In 2009, Dr. Gardner created the Facebook account for the Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and initially administered this account (https://www.facebook.com/groups/179133725966/). In recent years, he brought to Archives readers concepts about the use of smart phones for microscopic photography (http://www.archivesofpathology.org/doi/pdf/10.5858/arpa.2013-0425-ED and http://www.archivesofpathology.org/doi/pdf/10.5858/arpa.2014-0315-RA). As associate editor for Emerging Technologies and Techniques, Dr. Gardner has led a talented group of digital experts who have assisted with the Archives pioneering use of digital imaging in addition to serving as more traditional section editors.In addition to the Archives, Dr. Gardner's work has impacted several professional societies and multiple other venues. The lives of most practicing pathologists have been touched by Dr. Gardner directly or indirectly, whether they know it or not. Dr. Gardner has been the premier champion and visionary for the application of social media, mobile devices, and other new technologies to diagnostic pathology practice, professional and lay public education, academic collaboration, professional society outreach (most notably the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology and the American Society of Dermatopathology in addition to the College of American Pathologists), patient support groups (16 sarcoma and cutaneous lymphoma groups at last count), and more.In this 90th year of the journal, we are pleased to announce that Dr. Jerad Gardner has joined the eminent group of deputy editors-in-chief serving the Archives (Gregory Y. Lauwers, MD, Jennifer L. Hunt, MD, Sanja Dacic, MD, PhD, Raouf E. Nakhleh, MD, and, most recently, Fan Lin, MD, PhD). In conjunction with this, Dr. Gardner has created the Archives Twitter account @ArchivesPath and guided the establishment of a group of social media section editors.Dr. Gardner has been a mentor to an astonishing number of people through his multiple venues. Dr. Gardner is my mentor. He has much to teach all of us.
