Caracterización del componente arbóreo en los sistemas ganaderos de La Fortuna de San Carlos, Costa Rica

Abstract
Se caracterizaron los sistemas de produccion ganadera con enfasis en el componente arboreo en la region de la Fortuna de San Carlos en Costa Rica. Se encontraron tres tipos de sistemas de produccion: mixto (leche y agricultura), especializado en leche y doble proposito (leche y carne). El area total de las fincas en el sistema de doble proposito fue, en promedio, nueve veces superior al de los otros sistemas; el area con pasturas y arboles tambien fue mayor en este sistema. En promedio, la produccion de leche por finca en el sistema de doble proposito fue superior en un 82 por ciento a la del especializado en leche y en un 168 por ciento a la del sistema mixto, sin embargo, la productividad (kg ha-1) fue mayor en fincas especializadas en leche. Entre el 70 y el 88 por ciento de los arboles encontrados en los tres sistemas correspondieron a especies maderables; el laurel (Cordia alliodora) fue el mas abundante, aunque la densidad (11 arboles ha-1) se considera baja. El 85 por ciento de todas las fincas tiene cercas vivas donde predominan el poro (Erythrina sp) y el madero negro (Gliricidia sepium). La longitud total promedio de las cercas vivas fue mayor en el sistema de doble proposito (52.8 km) que en el especializado en leche (8.6 km) y en el sistema mixto (5.5 km); sin embargo, el porcentaje de cercas vivas con respecto al area de pastos fue similar en los tres sistemas de produccion. Se concluye que las fincas ganaderas de doble proposito tienen una mayor abundancia de especies maderables comerciales, lo que podria estar relacionado con el hecho de que los finqueros tratan de reducir los riesgos economicos diversificando la produccion.
