<abstract> <bold>Abstract. </bold>The pyrolysis and combustion behavior of animal breeding compost (compost blend sample) was evaluated by means of thermogravimetric-mass spectrometric analysis (TGA-MS). The moisture content of the sample was rather high (>40 wt.%) which supposes a mandatory drying step before using these types of samples in thermal applications. The main pyrolytic decomposition of the compost blend sample took place in a temperature range between 200 and 373 ºC. This temperature interval is lower than that observed in other types of biomass (200-450 ºC) and could be attributed to the effect of the ashes content of compost blend sample. The maximum decomposition peak was observed at 350 ºC (1.13 wt.%/ºC). The high residue content (char + ash) could also be influenced by the high K content of the sample, which promotes the char formation. The pyrolysis process was extended up to temperatures above 600 ºC due to the slow transformation of the char. The high amount of Ca and K species seemed to enhance the production of H2 and CH4. On the other hand, the combustion process was developed between 200 and 570 ºC and was characterized by two exothermic peaks. NOx were not detected during the combustion of the sample whereas SOx were found in really lows proportions. The ash produced in the combustion was around 25 wt. %. In addition the kinetics of the process were properly evaluated by the PMSM (Pseudo Multi-component Separate-stage Models) approach and fitted to reaction order one models.
