Tri-National Comparisons of Maternal Levels of Persistent Organic Pollutants

Abstract
ISEE-334 Objective: The North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) is sponsoring a Capacity Building Tri-National multicentered study to evaluate exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in primiparous women. The objective of this paper was to present the POPs levels that have been analyzed thus far. Material and Methods: The CEC project is collecting data from 5 sites in Canada, 10 sites in Mexico, and from 3 ongoing studies in the United States. Data include administration of a dietary questionnaire and collection of predelivery serum samples for analysis of an extensive panel of POPs. The goal is to enroll 30 mothers at each site. In the United States we have also extracted comparable data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Results: Overall data collection is ongoing. Thus far, the United States has results from 21 Native Alaska women who are currently enrolled in the Maternal Organic Monitoring Study (MOMS) in Alaska and 120 women with information available in NHANES 01-02. Geometric mean (GM) serum levels (per lipid basis) of POPs measured among the women in the MOMs study were as follows: GM (95% CI) for p,p′-DDE = 149 ng/g (115–193), for β-hexachlorocyclohexane = 18 ng/g (13–24), and for trans-nonchlor = 23 ng/g (17–31). The estimates at the 95th percentile for NHANES are as follows: estimate (95% CI) for p,p′-DDE = 632 ng/g (146–9240), for β-hexachlorocyclohexane = 13 ng/g (3–45), and for trans-nonchlor = 16 ng/g (10–47). The values for the remaining analytes are not reported because the proportion of results below the limit of detection was too high to provide a valid estimate. Conclusions: Women from the Alaska MOMs study have levels lower than US national level. Previous research has demonstrated age and foreign birth to contribute to differences in the level of POPs in pregnant women. Our ongoing analysis will evaluate regional similarities and differences among women with first time pregnancies.
