Abstract
Der Orientalismus von Oscar Wildes und Richard Strauss’ Salome ist am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts ein publikumswirksamer „Schleier“, der bei beiden Künstlern weniger ein ethnographisches Interesse bezeugt, als zur Inszenierung ihrer poetologisch-ästhetischen Modernität sowie ihrer moral- und sozialkritischen Polemik an der europäischen Gesellschaft des Fin de siècle dient. Sowohl in der ästhetischen Behandlung als auch in den Themen und Deutungsmustern Sexualität, Macht, Obsession, Grausamkeit, Weiblichkeit, Dekadenz -werden die aktuellen Verweisungszusammenhänge des Stückes und der Oper deutlich; dabei setzen Wildes symbolistische und Strauss musikdramaturgisch ausbalancierte psychologisierende Lesart unterschiedliche Akzente. Die exemplarisch herangezogene Rezeption zeigt die zeitgenössische Empfindlichkeit für die implizierten Aktualisierungsmöglichkeiten.
