Abstract
In view of the sheer bulk of legal translations that is produced and the vital role these play in our daily lives, it is surprising that at the beginning of the twenty-first century, still relatively little space is granted to this particular field in either translation studies or legal studies. In this Special Issue of the Rechtsgeleerd Magazijn THEMIS, five authors discuss some of the many questions raised by legal translation, including a historical overview, a discussion of formal equivalence in the specific case of EU translation, a study on the way the European Court of Justice deals with the divergences between different language versions of EU legislation and a discussion on how Canada's robust official bilingualism is not matched by functional bilingualism in the legal system.
