Abstract
A little more than two years ago, the anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss died at the age of one hundred. He was one of the leading intellectual figures of the second half of the twentieth century. This essay retraces the link that Levi-Strauss forged with mathematics, which he considered perfectly suited for the human and social sciences. This link was woven when the ”structuralist” Levi-Strauss met an unexpected difficulty while working on his doctoral thesis, now become famous, The Elementary Structures of Kinship, and Andre Weil, one of the founding members of the Nicolas Bourbaki group, presented a solution to him based on group theory. In the human sciences, using other than the classical mathematical tools of calculus and statistics thus gained followers, for example, in Quebec, the authors of a textbook in use in CEGEPs in the early 1970s. Resumen Hace dos anos, a la edad de 100 anos, murio el antropologo Claude Levi-Strauss, gran figura intelectual de la segunda mitad del siglo veinte. Este ensayo describe el vinculo que existe entre Levi-Strauss y las matematicas, las cuales, segun el, seŕian perfectamente adecuadas para el estudio de las ciencias humanas y sociales. Esta relacion se establecio a causa de una dificultad imprevista que Levi-Strauss encontro mientras preparaba su celebre tesis doctoral, Las Estructuras Elementales del Parentesco. Andre Weil, uno de los fundadores del grupo Nicolas Bourbaki, le propuso una solucion inspirada de la nocion de grupo. Como consecuencia, el empleo en el dominio de las ciencias humanas de utiles matematicos distintos del calculo diferencial y de las estadisticas iba a ganar adeptos. Entre ellos, los autores de un libro de texto utilizado en los cegeps a principio de los anos 1970.
