Frequency-domain Acoustic Wave Modelling through TI Media in Western Canada -Implications for Anisotropic FWI

Summary We apply the joint analyses of anisotropic traveltime tomography and finite-difference frequency-domain wave modelling to crosswell seismic data from Western Canada using a transversely isotropic model with a vertical symmetry axis. The geology of the survey region consists of late Jurassic/ early Cretaceous-aged, horizontally-layered sandstone and shale units. The objective of the survey was to quantify reservoir connectivity by characterizing the sandstone channels and impermeable shale barriers through expected contrasts in seismic velocity. Best-fitting models of vertical seismic velocity and Thomsen’s anisotropy parameters were obtained from anisotropic traveltime tomography, which were then used as the starting models for transversely isotropic wave modelling. Time-domain snapshots and shot gathers were compared to previously obtained results that used an isotropic modelling method with a stretched coordinate system to simulate elliptical isotropy. The results show that the elliptical assumption is an oversimplification for these data. When compared to handpicked arrivals, the transversely isotropic model better predicts the arrivals, which has important implications for seismic full waveform inversion. We propose that the transversely isotropic finite-difference frequency-domain forward modelling technique will produce successful inversion results, as it is more representative of the wave propagation physics and is more compatible with the starting models from anisotropic tomography.
