L'A. presente ses recherches sur l'education dans les reserves indiennes, et plus particulierement ses recherches de terrain des annees soixante parmi les Sioux oglala de la reserve de Pine Ridge, dans le Dakota du Sud. Il porte plus precisement son attention sur ce premier terrain parce qu'il permet aussi d'illustrer les difficultes que rencontre un chercheur inexperimente, et que, par ailleurs, il fait apparaitre les dynamiques sociales des systemes scolaires. L'A. expose d'abord quelques caracteristiques de la demarche de terrain telle qu'elle lui a ete enseignee a l'Universite de Chicago. Il indique egalement les elements utiles pour comprendre la situation des Sioux au moment de l'enquete. Il analyse ensuite la scolarisation des Sioux oglala, en suivant pour une part le fil chronologique de son enquete parce qu'il permet d'acceder, a travers les difficultes rencontrees, aux caracteristiques centrales des comportements des Sioux et de leurs familles a l'egard de l'ecole. Finalement, a partir du cas des Sioux oglala, il remarque que le travail de terrain peut devenir un exemple de l'instruction par experience, de l'instruction par apprentissage et immersion.
