Arktis er blitt satt ettertrykkelig på kartet i løpet av de siste 10-15 årene på grunn av klimaendringer, issmelting og konsekvensene av dette, men også på grunn av utsikter til betydelige naturressurser som fisk, olje, naturgass, mineraler og metaller. Denne nyåpnede verden stiller også de sirkumpolare statene overfor et antall nye utfordringer hva gjelder suverenitet og sikkerhet.\nCanada og Norge er nære allierte og har mye til felles, men de har også hver sin tolkning av hva arktisk sikkerhet innebærer. Norge ønsker sine allierte velkommen til nordområdene mens\nCanada foretrekker å markere suvereniteten alene og ser ingen rolle for NATO i Arktis. I denne oppgaven forsøker jeg avdekke og utforske bakgrunnen for den ulike bakgrunnen.\nDen viktigste forskjellen mellom den norske og den canadiske innstillingen til sikkerhets-politikken ligger i de selvdefinerte rollene statene har inntatt, Canada som mellommakt og leverandør av sikkerhet, Norge som småstat og nettoimportør av sikkerhet. Canada har aldri vært utsatt for en nasjonal trussel. Norge på sin side har hatt truende eller i det minste uforutsigbare naboer rundt seg konstant helt siden Norge ble en uavhengig stat i 1905 med Russland/Sovjet-unionen som konstant bekymring.\nGeografien og klimaet er også blant faktorene som påvirker de to landenes ulike sikkerhetspolitikk.
