Bioaccumulation characteristics of toxic chemical in three kinds of Reed family called Phragmites australis, Phragmites karka, and Phalaris arundinacea from Japan and Canada were investigated. Seven organophosphoric triesters (OPEs) and nine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Phrgmites and soils were monitored. All of the OPEs and eight PAHs were detected, among which tributyl phosphate, triethyl phosphate, tris (2-ethylhexyl) phosphate, fluoranthene and pyrene were detected frequently. The total concentration of OPEs ranged between N.D. and 10100ng/g dry weight and that of PAHs ranged between N.D. and 71000 ng/g dry weight. The concentrations tend to be higher in the ears than in the stems and leaves. Significant proportional relationships were observed between the concentrations in the ears and those in the other parts. The concentrations of OPEs and PAHs in soils tend to increase as the concentrations in Phragmites increase.
