Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

This chapter discusses energy transfer as work and heat. There are three different ways in which energy can be stored in a system. Potential energy and kinetic energy are macroscopic forms, and altering them requires a change in the position or velocity of the system. Internal energy includes all microscopic forms of energy storage. The chapter identifies different work modes, such as boundary work, flow work, shaft work, spring work and electrical work. It explores the first law of thermodynamics for both open and closed systems and provides energy balance calculations. It discusses new properties such as enthalpy and specific heat and describes the changes in internal energy and enthalpy for liquids, solids and gases. It analyses steady flow devices such as turbines, pumps, compressors, nozzles and diffusers. Turbines, pumps, compressors and heat exchangers are devices that exchange energy with the surroundings in the form of work or heat.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
