On a tendance à considérer que le remplacement du latin par la langue vernaculaire dans les chancelleries royales marque une étape importante du recul du latin dans la culture écrite de la fin du Moyen Âge. Dans le présent article, nous étudions les exemples du français en France et de l’anglais en Angleterre. On constate dans le premier cas que l’adoption du français par la chancellerie royale s’est faite au prix d’une relatinisation importante de la langue au cours du XIVe siècle. Dans le second cas, le retard de l’accession de l’anglais au statut de langue du roi s’explique par la résistance du latin et du français à l’usage de la langue vernaculaire d’Angleterre. Ce second exemple fait ressortir que la proximité entre le latin et le français a pu former pendant longtemps un double rempart à la montée de la langue vernaculaire et que l’anglais qui finit par devenir la langue des rois au XVe siècle s’était entre temps fortement romanisé.
