Abstract
Returning to the issue discussed in a 2006 publication, the author takes a stand in the on-going debate over the origin of the Baptistery, claiming that it should be set at the first half of the 12th century (but with modifications and additions in the 13th), as supported by recent historical lindings, stylistic comparisons, and its citation to the Pantheon. This first section of the article deals with a series of documents dating from between 1113 and 1150, previously considered but partially misinterpreted by the scholarship, identifying them as specific references to the building. Furthermore, it is maintained that references in the documents to st. John the Baptist in the papers of the chapter house of the Canonici of Florence Cathedral from the 9th to the first quarter of the 12th centuries refers not to the Baptistery, but rather to the Cathedral, which went by two names at the time - St. John the Baptist and St. Reparata. Analogously, the memory of the consecration of a church of St. John the Baptist on 6 Novembrer 1059 by Pope Nicholas II should almost surely be attributed not to the Baptistery but to the Cathedral, whose proto-Romenesque phase as revealed by excavations has been convincingly dated to the middle of the 11th century. Finally, the article will trace the stages of the curious metropolitan legend, which began to circulate no earlier than the 14th century according to which the Baptistery is actually as ancient Temple of Mars. This seems to be related to an incomplete equestrian statue standing near the Ponte Vecchio until 1333 flood which had been wrongly identified as Mars
