Abstract
The latest version of the summary card diagnosis and treatment of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) version 2014/2015 is based on the Multidisciplinary STI guideline for hospital based specialists. This document has been composed in an intensive collaborative effort with a broad range of medical specialists which included dermatologists, medical microbiologists, internal medicine specialists, neurologists, gynecologists, pediatricians and urologists. The advent of the multidisciplinary STI guideline and its summary card, stresses the transcendent nature of STI related problems. The guideline is divided into three parts: Part A. STI-related syndromes, Part B. Pathogens and disease, and C. Procedures. Part A. Discusses the STI related syndromes such as urethritis, vaginal discharge and vaginitis, epididymitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, balanoprostitis, proctitis, genital ulcers and inguinal lymphadenitis. In Part B The STI related pathogens are covered: Chlamydia trachomatis non - LGV infection, lymphogranuloma venereum, gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes and anogenital warts. The chapters are all structured as follows: description of the disease, diagnosis, infection, epidemiology, treatment, primary prevention, and further action in response to an infection. Part C discusses partner notification, sexual abuse and STI's in children. The main changes compared to the previous version which are dealt with in more detail include: 1. The current role of nucleic acid amplification tests in particular in anogenital chlamydia infections, lymphogranuloma venereum, and gonorrhea; 2. The recommended treatment for gonorrhea in the light of advancing resistance problems; 3. The increased risk of adverse outcomes in syphilis, especially in pregnant women and HIV coinfec-ted patients.
