Abstract
In het voorjaar van 1898 bezocht prins Albert -de toekomstige koning Albert I -de Verenigde Staten van Amerika, het noorden van Mexico en het zuidoosten van Canada. Het ging hier om een grote studiereis die kaderde in zijn voorbereiding op het koningschap. De prins werd op 11 maart 1898 ontvangen door de Amerikaanse president William McKinley en trok nadien incognito door Noord-Amerika, waar hij te gast was in tal van grote ondernemingen, universiteiten en liefdadigheidsinstellingen. Tijdens zijn reis schreef Albert zijn ervaringen neer in een dagboek. Deze bijdrage bevat een kritische editie van zijn reisverslag en probeert de bredere context waarin het bezoek aan de Verenigde Staten, Mexico en Canada plaatsvond te verduidelijken. Op die manier hopen we de bestaande historiografie over de vormingsjaren en de persoonlijkheid van de prins te vervolledigen. Daarnaast toont het reisdagboek hoe Noord-Amerika op het einde van de negentiende eeuw werd gepercipieerd door een vooraanstaande aristocraat uit West-Europa.
