Le développement de dessertes terrestres massifiées constitue un enjeu essentiel pour les pouvoirs publics, La compétitivité des ports dépend en grande partie de ces chaînes de transport (CNT 2005). Les ports qui parviennent à articuler l'escale des plus grands navires conteneurisés avec des dessertes terrestres à grands débits s'imposent comme centres de chargement principaux de leur rangée maritime par la maîtrise d'un vaste hinterland (Notteboom, 2004). Depuis quelques années, l'enjeu économique se double d'un véritable enjeu environnemental. La nécessité de réduire les émissions de CO2 concerne très fortement le secteur des transports, devenu aujourd'hui en France le premier secteur émetteur de CO2 (Citepa, 2007). Le constat que les modes fluviaux ou ferroviaires sont forcément plus propres que la route (Ademe, 2006) renforce l'idée de la nécessité de reporter une partie du trafic routier vers les transports combinés fleuve-route ou rail-route. La réalité est-elle simple ? Le transport combiné est-il nécessairement moins polluant que le transport routier ? Pour discuter ce questionnement, nous proposons une étude énergétique comparée entre un transport combiné fleuve-route et un transport "tout route" entre Le Havre et une vaste région Île-de-France sur la base d'un transport porte-à-porte de conteneurs. Elle permet de comparer, au plus près de la réalité, les deux types de transport et leurs conséquences en matière de rejet de CO2.
