Les fictions littéraires participent à l'invention du boulevard Saint-Laurent – la Main – comme « haut lieu » (Debarbieux, 1995) montréalais dans l'imaginaire urbain et à sa désignation au patrimoine national. La littérature en brosse un portrait vivant, sensuel, avec une attention forte au paysage, tant visuel que sonore, voire olfactif. Cosmopolitisme et nostalgie en sont les principales entrées, venant ainsi perpétuer le mythe de la Main, lieu d'arrivée et d'installation des communautés immigrées durant le XX e siècle. En créant une image forte dans la mémoire collective, la littérature vient également révéler le rapport entretenu par les habitants au boulevard Saint-Laurent. En dépit du déclin actuel des différentes communautés immigrantes le long du boulevard, les récits actuels réinvestissent les anciennes narrations, véritables géographies imaginaires et imaginées de la ville pour aboutir à une réinvention tant du boulevard que du cosmopolitisme qui lui est attaché. Dans cette réinvention, l'imaginaire littéraire du boulevard dans le centre-ville (dans l'ancien Red Light ) est mobilisé contre le projet urbain de Quartier des spectacles, comme registre de légitimation.
