Le comte de Bentheim régnait en 1600 sur un ensemble territorial conséquent, bien que morcelé.Ce n'était pas le cas 150 ans plus tôt ; ce ne sera plus le cas de ses successeurs 150 ans plus tard.Le mariage et l'héritage ont permis de réunir la fortune des Bentheim ; le mariage et l'héritage ont ensuite scellé leur déclin.Déchirés de conflits entre branches, abonnés au Tribunal de la Chambre Impériale, les Bentheim doivent finalement céder leurs plus belles terres aux Solms, anciens alliés, et aux princes qui guettent, tout autour, le moyen d'arracher leur territoire aux petits comtes perclus de dettes (le Brandebourg définitivement, le Hanovre provisoirement au XVIIIe s., le prince-évêque de Münster par petits bouts).L'alliance matrimoniale, longtemps parfois après qu'elle a eu lieu, possède pour les dynasties aristocratiques de l'Empire ce pouvoir à la fois cumulatif et explosif, quel que soit le soin accordé à des choix d'alliance mûrement réfléchis.
