Alors que la BD se consomme essentiellement sous la forme de recueil, plusieurs éditeurs de manga français ont tenté de reproduire les magazines de prépublication permettent aux éditeurs japonais de recruter et tester de jeunes talents, de créer une communauté autour des séries lancées par ce biais. Dans les années 1990, Glénat avait lancé son magazine Kaméha diffusant à la fois des mangas et des projets hybrides qui ne possédaient pas encore l’étiquette « manfra ». Le mensuel n’a pas survécu à la première crise du manga durant le passage aux années 2000. Néanmoins, deux éditeurs autres se sont lancés dans la prépublication de jeunes auteurs français par le biais de leurs revues. Pika Edition a diffusé dans Shônen Collection (30 volumes, 2003-2005) des mangas créés par de jeunes auteurs français. Les séries Dreamland (de Reno Lemaire) et DYS (de Moonkey) sont parues en 2005 sous la forme de chapitre mensuel avant d’être republiées en volume. Malgré l’arrêt du périodique faute de rentabilité, Les Humanoïdes Associés ont lancé leur magazine de prépublication Shogun Mag (2006-2009). Le parti pris était de diffuser des mangas créés par des scénaristes et des auteurs de différents pays. En analysant les différents modèles économiques (en librairie ou en kiosque) et les conditions de production de ces magazines (en coproduction avec le Japon ou non), il s’agit de mettre en lumière les contraintes spécifiques au marché français et les freins au développement du manfra lorsque celui-ci se calque trop sur le système japonais.
