Increasing the participation of women in science and engineering: a report on research and innovative programs

Abstract
The Department of Geomatics Engineering at the University of Calgary is the location of a Chair for Women in Science and Engineering which is aimed at increasing the visibility on issues pertaining to the attraction, retention and promotion of women in science and engineering fields. Some background on the Chair and its mandate is given along with an overview of the participation of women in science and engineering programs in Canada. Some of the research projects of the Chair, in collaboration with faculty members in the social sciences, are described and some of the findings are presented. These projects are designed to give a better understanding of the career decision making processes of young women and men so that new and innovative programs can be developed to increase the representation of women in science and engineering fields. Several new programs have been developed for girls, with two being described - a hands-on conference for grade 9 students to learn about new technologies, and an e-mail mentoring program.
