Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

their topic - Nordic area studies - as objectively as possible, and limited their geographic coverage to the United States and Canada: their definitions of Nordic area studies and its various subdivisions appear throughout this study, particularly at the beginning of the chapters. In addition, they promised each other to try to keep the object of the study in its proper perspective - as one element in that huge, indefinable institution which has come to be known as higher education. There is no model which the study could imitate, and hence no absolute standard by which the results can be judged. Though it is hard to believe, Nordic area studies is apparently the only discipline if indeed it can be called a discipline - which has been subjected to such a comprehensive cataloging effort. And for good reason; it is an immensely taxing and complex endeavour. No great intellect is required; but persistence, patience, meticulousness, and an incredible number of hours are absolute necessities. The wilder hopes of the authors have not been realized, but the idealism implicit in such dreams has no place in an undertaking like this. Its success depends on the wholehearted cooperation of hundreds of human beings, and like humans in all walks of life, Scandinavianists have their fair share of human shortcomings. An expression of profound gratitude is due to the hundreds of friends and colleagues who cooperated. Those who did not cooperate will get another chance. Due respect must also be paid Hedin Bronner and Gosta Franzen who published between 1946 and 1967 a series of articles in Scandinavian Studies and elsewhere, which provided the historical data on which this study is based.1 Other data often cited below were published by Gene G. Gage, also in Scandinavian Studies, in a series of

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
