Vaste ambition que d'crire une histoire culturelle de l'Allemagne moderne, alors mme que l'historiographie rcente fait parfois, un mot prs, la mme constatation que le cur de campagne de Bernanos : tout est culture. Disons le d'emble : ce n'est pas au plan de la rflexion thorique et du renouvellement conceptuel que se situent les atouts les plus vidents du livre de P.C.H., qui reste attach une conception assez restreinte de la culture (les institutions, les cours, les glises et les arts constituent l'essentiel de ces cinq cents pages). Il suffira peut-tre de dire que la bibliographie ignore des noms comme Hans Erich Bdeker ou Rudolf Schenda pour marquer les limites d'un volume dont l'criture claire et agrable n'vite pas ici ou l quelques simplicits. Pourtant, le prsent ouvrage mrite tout fait de prendre sa place aux cts d'autres synthses sur le mme thme (on pense bien sr par exemple aux trois tomes de
