Abstract
Les manuels allemands sont des introductions à la recherche : l'exposition des principaux courants et tendances, la mise à l'épreuve des concepts et stratégies historiographiques, tout ce qui, en un mot, relève de l'exercice bien connu du Stand der Forschung va au-delà de la simple information du lecteur et se veut immédiatement constitutif de cela même, question ou période, à quoi l'on entreprend d'initier.L'orientation toujours fortement dialectique de l'exposé, liée au goût du débat et au souci de référer exactement les positions discutées aux textes où on peut les rencontrer, tend parfois à autonomiser la discussion, voire à en faire une fin en soi.L'« Encyclopédie de l'histoire allemande » des éditions Oldenbourg est sans doute la collection où ce risque se fait le plus vivement sentir.Les cent volumes prévus à terme -70 environ sont parus à ce jour -suivront tous le même plan : deux parties toujours, un « panorama encyclopédique » (enzyklopädischer Überblick) visant d'abord à livrer l'essentiel de l'information, puis les « grands problèmes et tendances de la recherche », qui dans bien des cas se taillent la part du lion.Avec sa Reformation, O.M. a sans doute d'ores et déjà atteint les limites du genre.
