Au cours des dix dernieres annees, les systemes sonars de sondage bathymetrique par secteurs ont ete largement acceptes dans les organismes de leves hydrographiques. De tels systemes promettent de representer plus completement et precisement le plancher oceanique. Compte tenu de cette confiance grandissante, les normes hydrographiques ont evolue afin de tirer avantage de cette nouvelle capacite. Telles que fixees, ces nonnes entrainent maintenant de nouvelles demandes qui vont au-dela des exigences minimales de precision pour la profondeur ; dans les nouveaux criteres il y a la couverture et la resolution spatiale. En raison des progres de la detection et de l'orientation des fonds, les normes de precision peuvent etre respectees tout en utilisant des secteurs de plus en plus etendus, bien que les erreurs decoulant d'une colonne d'eau imparfaitement connue imposent une limite pratique sur le plan operationnel. Si la precision verticale etait le seul critere, cet elargissement possible des secteurs signifierait une efficacite superieure des leves. Les demandes additionnelles de recherche complete des fonds et de resolution specifique ne sont toutefois pas faciles a satisfaire avec les secteurs elargis. Un certain nombre de nouveaux problemes lies a la densite de sondage et aux dimensions de faisceau sont apparus; ceux ci pourraient, selon l'interpretation de la norme et dans certaines circonstances, rendre l'ancienne technologie du faisceau unique et du balayage lateral plus rentable pour repondre a ces besoins.
