Pierre Vallières est une figure marquante du Front de libération du Québec (FLQ), un mouvement politique indépendantiste qui s’attaque violemment, durant les années 1960, au gouvernement fédéral canadien, aux symboles de la Couronne britannique et du capitalisme international au Canada. La traduction en anglais de son fameux essai Nègres blancs d’Amérique paraît en 1971, trois ans après son édition originale et un an après la crise d’Octobre. Aux États-Unis, cet essai suscite d’emblée un intérêt des grands organes de presse et des journaux de la gauche radicale. Pourquoi ce livre, rédigé en prison à New York, interdit au Canada au motif de sédition, provoque-t-il autant de réactions aux États-Unis, qu’elles soient plutôt favorables ou plutôt hostiles? Ce que les commentateurs retiennent avant tout, c’est l’analogie que Vallières établit entre les Québécois francophones et les Afro-Américains. En revenant de façon fouillée sur la réception ambivalente de cet essai dans la presse américaine, l’article propose de s’interroger sur la pertinence de ce raisonnement analogique et sur son efficacité rhétorique dans le contexte de l’époque.
